There are 350,000 office jobs which could be done remotely according to a new report.
The research is from Grow Remote, an organisation that promotes remote working and provides training programmes for individuals and employers.
The finding are based on analysis of a new Eurofound “Quality of Life in the EU 2024” survey.
The data found that 72.5% of “teleworkable” jobs in Ireland are currently performed remotely or hybrid, but 27.5% remain office based.
Grow Remote estimates that this means that over 350,000 jobs in Ireland could be remote but currently are not.
“By transitioning just one-third of these potentially remote jobs to fully remote roles over the next three years, Ireland could create an additional 100,000 remote jobs,” the study found.
The report concludes that making these jobs fully remote would boost local economies by an estimated €150 million, increase community engagement, and significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
Tracy Keogh, Co-founder and Chair of Grow Remote, said the Government should set up an agency responsible for winning a proportion of the remote jobs available on the market.
“If we landed 10,000 of the available 100,000 jobs, that would be €130 million for the taxpayer and jobs in the most remote regions of Ireland,” Ms Keogh said.
“It will require structural changes as we’re not currently set up to drive this.”
“We need quick wins to ring-fence remote jobs to the island of Ireland,” She added.
