Live Register figures edge 0.4% higher in October – CSO

New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted Live Register total for October rose by 0.4% to 169,000 people – an increase of 700 people from the previous month.

The CSO said that the unadjusted Live Register total stood at 163,766 people for October.

Today’s figures show that the 35-44 age group made up the largest number of those on the Live Register in October at 37,738 people – 23% of the total.

The number of people on the Live Register increased in three counties in the 12 months to October, with the largest percentage rise in Kildare at 4.8%, followed by Offaly (up 2.9%) and Dublin (up 0.9%).

The CSO noted there were 106,719 people on the Live Register in October for less than one year, which was 1,877 fewer people than the same time last year – a decrease of 1.7%.

The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment as it includes part-time workers as well as seasonal and casual workers who are entitled to Jobseeker’s Benefit or Jobseeker’s Allowance.

Figures released earlier this week by the CSO showed that the unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.2% in October from a near-record low of 4.1% a month earlier.

The unemployment rate for September was revised down from a provisional reading of 4.3%, the CSO said.
