New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that Irish ports handled 12.1 million tonnes of goods in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 2% compared with the same time last year.
The CSO said that goods forwarded from Irish ports amounted to 3.8 million tonnes during January, February and March, while nearly 8.3 million tonnes of goods were received.
The total number of vessels that arrived in the seven main Irish ports – Bantry, Cork, Drogheda, Dublin, Rosslare, Shannon and Waterford – during the first quarter of 2024 fell by 5% when compared with the first quarter of 2023.
Dublin Port accounted for 61% of all vessel arrivals in Irish ports and for 49% of the total tonnage of goods handled in the three month period.
The CSO also said that Great Britain & Northern Ireland accounted for 32% of the total tonnage of goods handled in the main ports by region of trade, while EU countries made up 51% of the total tonnage of goods handled in the main ports.
